From 12 to 27 September, the town of Haldensleben and its surrounding districts will once again be transformed into an open-air book fair brimming with literary discoveries. We invite you to immerse yourselves in the fascinating world of books as part of our popular city literature festival, ‘Literatur findet Stadt’. For 16 days, Haldensleben will become a mecca for book lovers who enjoy reading – and, in this case, listening.
In unusual spots and popular venues, we promise you exciting encounters, entertaining readings and inspiring discussions centred on one of the world’s most wonderful hobbies. In the surrounding districts, too, the organisers have once again come up with some great ideas and are opening up interesting reading venues for literary events.
This year’s programme is a colourful smorgasbord of literary delights – look forward to a vibrant stage for literature, language and exchange. I wish you inspiring moments, stimulating conversations and many lasting impressions.

Songs are presented in a playful way – and, of course, the audience is encouraged to sing along at the top of their voices – centring on the whole world of singing and making music. Along the way, a number of instruments – some of them rather unusual (a singing saw, a sea drum, a lotus flute, a ukulele, a flugelhorn, a banjo, a ‘Dröthe’ and others) – are showcased. The little girl Adele, who of course plays the ukulele, acts as the cue-giver and guides the audience through the programme via her friend MUSICUS-SPIRITUS (Wolfgang Rieck).

Book club discussion on ‘Das Tränenhaus’ by Gabriele Reuter This event focuses on the book ‘Das Tränenhaus’ by Gabriele Reuter, which was reissued this year by Reclam. It can also be read online via Project Gutenberg. The book by the author, who spent some time in Haldensleben during her youth, was first published in 1908 and caused a scandal due to its unvarnished portrayal of women’s lives at that time. Ideally, everyone attending this evening would have already read the book *Das Tränenhaus* (15 September, 6.00 pm) so that a discussion about its content can take place. However, anyone who simply wishes to listen is also very welcome.

Mark Daniel reads exciting and funny stories from everyday life at DB. Train cancellations, delays, row over the Deutschland-Ticket: anyone wanting to bash the railways can draw fully on the daily statistics of mishaps. But you can also look at travelling with the DB in a completely different light: no two journeys are the same; time and again, the tracks switch to adventure. And what’s a delay, really? More travel time for the same ticket price!
In ‘Bahn-Bingo’, Mark Daniel brings together quirky episodes, exciting stories about encounters and unpredictable events, as well as the coolest station announcements. We also get to know the invisible man who makes the station announcements across the country.

For 50 years, Bärbel Schön, a resident of Haldensleben, has been writing poetry, initially as part of the Kulturbund, and later within the Haldensleben writers’ circle and with the ‘Wortschätze’ group in Magdeburg. She was keen to practise calligraphy on her own texts. The foundations for this were laid whilst studying the works of Gisela Steineckert at the ‘Kritzelstube’ in Magdeburg.
This was followed by workshop stays on Sylt and courses with Birgit Nass and Mari Bohley in Dresden. Excerpts from this exploration in words and images will be presented at the reading evening. An accompanying exhibition, on display at the museum until 31 October 2026, features collages, drawings and watercolours based on her texts, created using mixed media techniques. Catering: drinks and light refreshments; artworks are available for purchase. At the opening, Bärbel Schön, Marlies Hauer from the Spinnstube and Martina Wiemers from the Haldensleben Writers’ Circle will be reading.

A clever plot with local colour from Hiddensee. – Dry humour, edgy characters, a North German atmosphere. In the latest instalment of the island crime series, Tim Herden once again delivers a successful blend of captivating entertainment, gripping suspense, dry humour and authentic characterisation. All this makes his novels a refreshing addition to the crime fiction scene.

Literary Walk: Original texts and poems about trees, flowers and all manner of creepy-crawlies. An entertaining literary stroll through the park with members of the Haldensleben Writers’ Circle.

Literary project in the park with the PFFG Pupils from the Prof. Friedrich Förster Gymnasium were invited to take a seat in the park and write their own pieces – for example, short stories, poems, rap songs or poetry slams centred on Villa Albrecht, the park or the ‘Generations Benches’ designed by the artist Max Grimm. These could be inspired directly by the design of the benches or be stories linked to the park – ‘Who might have sat here?’, “A conversation between young and old,” “A moment that changed everything – right here,” or “A bench that listens to stories?”. The pupils will turn these creative pieces into graphic designs and display them in the park for all visitors to see. They will also be available digitally via QR codes.
Do come along to the closing event for the various year groups, who will be presenting their projects live in the park in the form of readings or performances. You are warmly invited. Refreshments and snacks will be available at our ‘Enjoyment Corner’. The Friends of Secondary Education Association (Förderverein der Freunde gymnasialer Bildung e.V.) would be grateful for any donations.

Inspector Sanjit is the central character in Arne Drews’s Nepal-set crime novels. Dr Drews is also the founder of the organisation Nepalmed, based in Grimma, and serves as its chairman.
For 25 years, Nepalmed has been working through various projects to develop and improve medical facilities and to train medical staff in Nepal. The focus is on providing sustainable aid that benefits local people in the long term.
The organisation cooperates with hospitals in Kathmandu and works closely with local partners to strengthen healthcare provision, particularly in remote and disadvantaged areas such as Gorkha and Solukhumbu. Arne Drews’ experiences at Ammipal Hospital and with the government authorities in Gorkha have inspired him to turn these into short crime novels.
These have been published by Edition Nepalmed since 2017. Nine books have now been printed, and a tenth is due to be published later this year.
All proceeds from sales go directly towards Nepalmed’s projects.
The books have since been translated into English and Spanish. The first novel in this series won third prize at the New Zealand Mountain Film and Book Festival in 2018.
Barbara and Michael Reiser have been undertaking regular trekking tours in the Himalayas since 2006. Twenty years ago, they returned to Nepal from Tibet via the Zhangmu border crossing. This is situated in the neighbouring valley to the area affected by flooding this year. This border crossing was so severely damaged in the 2015 earthquake that it remained closed to foreigners. The epicentre of the earthquake was in Ghorkha. At that time, Nepalmed provided funding to support the destroyed villages in developing a tourism infrastructure, particularly for the Ghorkha Heritage Trek. The Reisers have completed this trek twice and gained unforgettable impressions of this magnificent landscape and its charming inhabitants.
The novels about Inspector Sanjit’s cases are on sale. All proceeds from sales and all donations will be used in full to fund Nepalmed’s projects in areas repeatedly affected by natural disasters.

Cuban evening featuring the art of Cuban artist Teresa Casanueva: ‘In the Breath of Time’ – paintings, drawings and prints.
Live music from 7.30 pm by Los Cuban Boys. Between the visible and the merely intuited, the Cuban-born Berlin artist Teresa Casanueva develops a distinctive contemporary artistic voice: paintings, drawings and graphic works that do not depict time, but rather make it tangible – as a mood, a breath, a fleeting moment in which past and present touch one another. Teresa Casanueva, born in Havana (Cuba), graduated from the BURG Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle (textiles; postgraduate studies in painting and printmaking) and lives in Berlin as a freelance artist. Cuban live music will round off the evening from 7.30 pm: since 2009, Los Cuban Boys have been synonymous with authentic Cuban live music of the highest calibre. The group consists of three native Cubans who received a thorough musical education in their homeland and grew up with the traditional rhythms of Cuba. Their varied repertoire spans the entire spectrum of Latin American and Caribbean music – from salsa, cha-cha-cha and merengue to reggaeton and rumba.
Their aim – and ours – is to thrill the audience on the evening of the exhibition opening with Caribbean energy, emotion and the highest musical quality.
The exhibition is open to visitors during opening hours until 24 October 2026.

Our guests will be Hartmut Schulze, author of the Beendorf Saga, and his wife Karla, who will be telling Benno’s story together. Let yourself be captivated by Benno’s thrilling tale. The book series *‘Benno’s Village’, ‘Benno’s Journey’,* ‘Benno’s Fate’ and ‘Benno’s Legacy’ depicts the life of the village lord Benno vom Allertal and his adventures alongside Lothar von Süpplingenburg, who rose from a simple landgrave to become Holy Roman Emperor. The evening will draw to a close by the fire with appropriate live music and drinks.

Max Heckel presents his new pieces from his latest book, *Kamellen*. Because storytelling is just like music. All the chord progressions are written down. And all the plots probably are too. Now it all comes down to how you arrange the stories. Somewhere between content and form, there’s a whole lot of everyday life, things open to criticism and things that are simply wonderful. Sprinkled with a dash of self-criticism and irony, this creates a distinctive ‘Heckel’ sound, which the self-proclaimed ‘sauerkraut poet’ accompanies with songs. Not a must. But a ‘could be’. A lovely ‘could be’. And that’s worth a lot in itself. Because hunger is the best cook.

Now things are getting political – and in a big way! Marc-Uwe Kling has published the fifth volume of the *Kangaroo Chronicles*, and that’s reason enough to read from it. The ‘Compagnie Alte Zeiten’ will be presenting the work, as well as other subversive stuff by Mikhail Soschtschenko and Ephraim Kishon. Preliminary conclusion: a rebellion like this is hard to organise, unless you work subversively....

You are welcome to present your own books set in or about the region.

Whilst in her Magdeburg crime novels only professional detectives solve crimes, in the ‘Bathrobe Gang’ stories it is three friends who unwittingly keep stumbling upon clues to a crime. Even though none of the crimes described have ever actually happened, they are all within the realm of possibility. Authenticity and realism are very important to her, despite the fiction. There is also no shortage of humour. To date, the self-published author has released 16 books, and there is still no end in sight.

A spooky and humorous theatrical walk through the Old Town. No one knows their way around the darkness better. – Edgar Allan Poe’s raven steps out of the eerie poem and invites you on a spine-chilling, macabre walk through the dark greenery, past the Old Cemetery to the city walls and into the Old Town. For this sombre bird can do more than just utter ‘Nevermore’. He can see the souls of the dead, knows exactly where and how murders took place, and recounts these stories with a dark sense of humour. He tells of werewolves and vampires, of the living who have lost the will to live and the dead who are all the more alive, pokes fun at people’s superstitions and, in doing so, presents a number of classics: he leads the way through the thicket, where ringlets glisten, croaks lyrical fountains, and above it all the Morning Star glows.
A spine-tinglingly delightful experience guaranteed to give you goosebumps and make you laugh.

On 25 September 2026, a murder will take place at the Wedringen village hall. On paper, of course. The author, Jana Burkhardt, grew up in Wolmirstedt and now lives in a small village in the Altmark region. She reads crime stories from her books. Her third collection of short crime stories is due to be published at the end of August 2026. Jana Burkhardt writes and ‘commits murders’ as a hobby in her home region and the surrounding area. She is a member of the Mörderische Schwestern e.V.

The duo ‘Ol’ Hill’ are attempting to bring poems, songs and stories to the stage, all of which are connected in one way or another. To this end, Torsten Olle has selected 13 poems about love from his body of work as a poet. Together with Wolfram Hille, they have chosen 13 songs on the same theme by musicians as diverse as Gundermann, John Denver, Bryan Adams, Stoppok and, of course, Bob Dylan. Always on the hunt for clues, Torsten Olle talks about his texts and explains the significance that poems and songs by other artists have always held in their creation.

The Reading Day begins at 10.00 am with a virtual tour of Haldensleben. The after-school club children from Erich Kästner Primary School, led by Marion Krause, will show us Haldensleben through children’s eyes using pictures.
From 11.30 am, little animal heroes will save the world in Ilona Kassner’s story. The author explains that you don’t have to be big to achieve great things!
From 12.30 pm, you can get to know Lea and her stories with the author Gundula Ihlefeldt. Lea is a 7-year-old primary school pupil. She stands by what she does – she finds head lice fascinating, wants to protect bees and flowers, and wishes so much for friends. Stay tuned! After the reading, you can make your own ‘friendship stone’. In Charlotte Buchholz’s exciting story, you’ll find out what adventures Tom and Sarah have at the Pömmelte Ring Sanctuary on their journey 4,000 years back to our Neolithic ancestors. The reading programme will be framed and accompanied by music from Ms Stefanie Szibor

Kathrin Hamel will read from her latest collection of short stories, *Im Fluge*.
Clemens Esser will read his own fairy tales and stories of encounters and memories – stories that focus more on the journey than on the destination.
Charlotte Buchholz will read short stories from her book *Wenn sich die Welle legt*. The theme is how every failure can hold the promise of a new beginning and hope.
Gundula Ihlefeldt explores the chaos of emotions. Her truths about life, told with a twinkle in the eye, invite you to relax, dream or simply have a laugh.
Gabriele Kluge reads from her new book: “Flapping Wings” – a bittersweet love story.
All the authors are well-known in Saxony-Anhalt and beyond, and have numerous publications to their name, both individual books and contributions to anthologies, some of which have even won awards.

During the reading, young people and the young at heart are seamlessly transported from a bygone world to the present day. The story is set in the special, magical period of the 12 Raunächte between Christmas and Epiphany, and takes place in a rural setting where legends and traditions seem particularly alive.
Readers accompany the main character into an incredible, nocturnal reality, in which he discovers the past, comes to terms with himself and his present, and is thereby able to shape his future.
For 38 years, the author has been inspiring people of all ages with a passion for history. Instead of dry dates and facts, she tells exciting, little-known and mysterious stories from various centuries and eras, bringing the past to life in a vivid way.

“A clothes size isn’t the be-all and end-all,” says Franziska Troegner, who defies all norms not only through her versatility as an actress. She has appeared alongside ‘Brecht icons’, the multi-talented Diether Krebs, Hollywood star Johnny Depp (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and, for the past 20 years, Dieter Hallervorden.
The audience knows and loves her as a woman who holds her own with natural charm, wit and down-to-earthness. In her book *Permanently Trend-Resistant*, Franziska Troegner recounts her experiences on TV diet and fitness programmes, her adventures with washbasins and double sinks, and her encounters with Michael, her great hero from Berlin’s Humannplatz.
She tells stories about film, theatre and cabaret, what it was like in the East, and what it’s like today.
